Over the past several decades, a crisis in access to emergency surgical care has been identified, highlighted in an Institute of Medicine report entitled ‘Hospital-Based Emergency Care: At the Breaking Point.” The specialty of Acute Care Surgery was born out of necessity and innovation. Trauma Surgery has expanded from treating the critically injured to broad surgical support needs of both the hospital and its medical staff.
